Limitations of material performance
- Rating and duration: Even the best fire – proof materials have their limits. Fire – resistance ratings indicate the amount of time a material can withstand fire exposure before it starts to break down. For example, a fire – proof air – conditioner cover might have a 1 – hour fire – resistance rating. This means it can hold up for an hour under standard fire – testing conditions, but after that, it may start to degrade and allow the fire to pass through.
- Intensity of the fire: In an extremely intense and long – lasting fire, such as a large – scale industrial fire or a major building conflagration, the heat levels can far exceed the capabilities of the fire – proof cover. The cover may warp, crack, or otherwise be damaged due to the intense heat, allowing the fire to spread to the air – conditioner and beyond.

Gaps and openings
- Installation and fit: If the air – conditioner cover is not installed properly, there may be gaps around the edges or where the cover meets other structures. These gaps provide a path for flames and hot gases to bypass the fire – proof material of the cover.
